Independent Daily Reading
During our 120 minute ELA block students engage in Independent Daily reading. At the beginning of the year we did a series of lessons on how to choose "Just Right Books" and reasons we might abandon a book. As a class we developed a set of guidelines for what Independent Reading Should look like.
My classroom library is stocked with a variety of genres for my students to choose from. They use their independent reading books to practice the reading strategies and skills modeled during our mini lessons. These book can be used toward Reading Counts Goals. Each student has a goal of 16 points a month. Combining points from class literature books, literature center books, and IDR books this should not be a problem. Books will be tracked in their black data folders. This will help them to narrow down a genre they prefer while helping them to vary their reading topics.
