I have posted 10 speeches on the writing page. These speeches were written in MLK Jr. model. The students chose a topic about which they had a dream for the future. They then used MLK Jr. I have a dream speech to help compose their own speech. They were so wonderful. I sent home permission slips to allow me to post them on this site. If you didn't get one but would like to have the speech posted please let me know in the comments. I will post it ASAP. I am loving the amazing conversations we are having about civil rights and MLK Jr. The students have been very interested in this topic. Many have a hard time understanding the idea of and why anyone would want segregation. Which I think is a testament to Dr. King's Legacy and our country's progress. We have a few more lessons involving MKL Jr. including some plays we are performing and some poems written by Langston Hughes. Be on the look out for a essay that explains why MLK Jr. was a great leader! We intergrated multiple sources to develop our responses. They should be complete and ready for publication by the end of next week. Have a great weekend!

Thursday is the end of the quarter. Please be advised all work must be turned in at the end of day on Thursday including Island of the Blue Dolphin. Monday we will begin fresh. A's for everyone. Now we just need to work hard to keep them.
The following information is intended to help you understand what to expect your students to be working on for the next 9 weeks. Specific pacing is identified in their daily planners. Feel free to help your child prepare or review for these topics. They can also use their notebooks, workbooks, and websites to help them review and study. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
Sorry about the delay in getting the new class literature book study guide up here. It has been a busy couple of days. Today we have a wonderful visit from our state representative David Santiago. It was wonderful. I was so proud of all the students not only in their respectful behavior and attention but in the intelligent, thought provoking questions they asked. Pictures were taken and I will post one as soon as they are sent to me! We are also going to have a visit from another local government person soon. School board member Linda Cuthbert has graciously agree to come in and talk with the students about many different topics including school uniforms which we are in the middle of writing an opinion editorial on. We will be submitting our editorials to the school newspaper, so watch the next Bronco! I think it is so great for the students to put faces to the things and people we have been learning about.
We are wrapping up the first quarter. Grades close on the 23rd. Which is also a no school day. Please be sure that all work including study guides is turned in by then. Please help me encourage each student to study at home. I know there are so many things that get in the way from "I forgot my notebook at school to a broken wrist but I can definitely see the success of those who are proclaiming they studied. The scores on the VLT were far above all my expectations. I will send home the report on those soon but can't send home the test itself. If you would like to review it please let me know and we can schedule a time for that. I will be going over the test with the students as well. Every possible learning opportunity! Have a great night! Miss A Shout out to Caleb! He is our current star of the week! Great job Caleb!
At 3 today the grade book pulled grades for progress reports. Please remember this is just a snapshot of where the students' grades are right now. It will change as early as an hour from now when I put in our map skills quiz and tomorrow after a quick rounding check. So please don't panic. If you would like to meet or discuss grades, strategies for improvement or celebrate with me, please send me an email of when you are available. I will check my schedule and get back to you. I know Science will be the subject that concerns most of you right now but again please don't panic. This is the hardest topic in science. We will continue to review and practice the skills and tools we learned about this last month throughout the year. The tests to come will all have questions about the nature of science on them so there is a chance to reassess and show mastery of these science skills.
As of this week, the math blow outs will count slightly in the grade book. We will still take one every day but only the 2 best scores will count. They only be weighted as .3 instead of 1. So it is like counting like a 1/3 of a quiz. Starting second quarter this will get even more challenging as the grade is weighted more (.6) and I am going to shorten the time frame to 4 minutes instead of five. I will start announcing the four minute mark so the students can start judging their speed. They are excited by this challenge. I hope you all saw the note that came home showing your student's progress on this skill. I put so much emphasis on knowing their basic facts because everything we do from here on out in math will use this knowledge. Please keep them moving on The Trumpet and the Swan. I am hearing very positive feedback from the students about this book. Tonight is Chapter 9. And don't forget the study guide! You should be finishing up Charlotte's Web tonight. Please bring in your book and completed study guide tomorrow. The substitute, Ms. Finner, will collect both tomorrow. You will also be rewarded with the movie! Have a great day at school while I am off learning how to work our new computer program!
Way to Go STAR student of the month, Royce! You have been showing star behavior and we all are seeing it. Keep up the fabulous work!!
For the last 2 weeks we have been working really hard on mastering the "4th grade reading strategy". I am proud to say that after reviewing the first independent trial we are off to a very good start. Now that doesn't mean all perfect scores but scores that I am very proud of. We will continue to practice all the different steps in the process as well as each story structure. But I am so proud of all their hard work already! So check out the grade book and let me know if you have any questions, concerns, celebrations you want to share or clarifications.
Want to give a special shout out to Mason C. for being our first STAR student of the week. He has worked very hard these first few day of the year and has set a wonderful example for his classmates. Way to go, Mason!
We are mid way through the second week of school and things are going fabulous. The other teachers are getting tired of me bragging about how awesome my class is! we have been working very hard in reading, science, math and social studies all while trying to get to know one and other. We have 2 new friends this year, so welcome to them. We are starting a new unit in math. We will be looking at place value up to one million. We will be reading, writing, comparing and rounding to the millions place with in the next two weeks. Please look into sumdog, frontrow and learnzillion for videos and practice opportunities. I will also be posting some videos in the math section as well. In Social studies we are going to be working on community, government function and the 3 branches of government. Science we are finishing up nature of science and moving into space (my favorite unit). Next week we will begin our small group literature circle books and centers. I know they are excited for that since it will break up our long morning for them a bit. Just a quick reminder that we don't eat lunch till 12:05 so we have a snack time around 10. Please send in a quick, easy, healthy snack with your student. I don't have any snacks here to offer them. If there are any beginning of the year papers still out there (I put extras of what I still need in the mailboxes today)please turn them in ASAP. I have to have them all in to the office by Friday. If you have any questions, comments, compliments, concerns or just want to touch base with me please do so at the email above. Thanks!
